Visitors may have heard of the Bayeux Tapestry – but what about the Overlord Embroidery? This 83m-long artwork with 34 hand-stitched panels tells the story of D-Day and the Battle of Normandy, with the work on show at Portsmouth’s D-Day Museum.

  • Portsmouth Museum houses more than 40,000 items, including the world’s largest collection dedicated to Sherlock Holmes creator Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
  • Unique in English professional football as being the only ground not located on the British mainland, fans can tour Portsmouth FC’s Fratton Park stadium on Portsea Island to learn more about the historic club.

Getting to Portsmouth

Located 74 miles (119 kilometres) south-west of London, Portsmouth is nestled on the south coast of England.

London Heathrow and London Gatwick Airport are both approximately 60 miles (100 kilometres) away from Portsmouth. Both are connected by train, with Gatwick offering a direct rail service to Portsmouth via Southern Rail in just under one and a half hours.

Heathrow requires several changes when travelling to Portsmouth by train. The most direct way to get from Heathrow to Portsmouth is via National Express coach. The journey is direct and takes as little as 90 minutes.

 

Getting around Portsmouth

By bus

Regular public bus services connect Portsmouth and the surrounding area with larger coaches offering trips further afield.

By bike

A flat and compact city, Portsmouth is ideal to explored by bike, with miles of designated cycling routes that are safe and scenic.

On foot

A walker’s and runner’s paradise, Portsmouth’s flat landscape makes it easy to explore on foot — from city centre strolls to wildlife routes.
