International Golf Travel Market comes to Wales in 2020
Wales has been confirmed as the 2020 host of the global B2B event, International Golf Travel Market (IGTM), the first time the event will be held in the UK. Brokered by our business events team, the event will take place on 26-29 October 2020 at the newly opened ICC Wales and the Celtic Manor Resort. Thousands of golf tourism suppliers, venues, destinations and buyers will meet and do business over the course of three days.
Britain welcomes One Young World
Following the successful bid last year to host One Young World – the global forum for young leaders – the event took place last week in London.
Supported by the Business Events Growth Programme, the event saw the Duchess of Sussex attend a star-studded opening ceremony at the Royal Albert Hall and welcome thousands of young leaders, entrepreneurs, social change and advocates from nearly 200 countries.
Business Events team host Ambassador Programme workshop in brand new ICC Wales
Taking place over two days, the Business Events team hosted the Ambassador Programme and Event Legacy workshop at the newly opened ICC Wales on 17-18 September.
The workshop was held as part of our programme to increase the skills and knowledge of the UK’s business events sector, a key initiative in the Business Events Action Plan as part of the Tourism Sector Deal.
Facilitated by Caeliam Director, Lesley Williams, covered a number of topics from designing and delivering local ambassador programmes, recruiting ambassadors, understanding the importance of creating a legacy from events, and how to build and sustain your legacy.
Attending from all over the UK, the 32 attendees spent the two days learning from guest speakers Rohit Kulkarni from The British Elbow and Shoulder Society, Karin Burger, Director SPIE Europe, and Amanda Ferguson, Head of Business Tourism at Marketing Edinburgh. The workshop also included interactive sessions where participants shared and discussed their ideas with industry professionals through the ‘share and gain’ session.

Promoting UK MICE suppliers to US buyers
On 3-4 June, we exclusively sponsored the Global Meetings Leaders' Summit in Washington DC. The event consisted of individual appointments between UK suppliers and US MICE buyers to build business connections and showcase the UK’s extensive business events offering. The two-day event also featured seminars from industry experts to provide valuable insights into how to grow their business.
Building Business for England at IMEX Frankfurt
Over 20 UK destination, venues and hotels joined us on our stand at IMEX Frankfurt, to promote England and generate business through one-to-one meetings with international MICE buyers. The trade show provided our stand partners with the opportunity to meet and do business with buyers from up to 83 countries. The England stand celebrated some of the most iconic English TV and film moments, demonstrating how venues, destinations and hotels can provide the ‘red carpet treatment’.
Best of the UK's business events sector on show at MeetGB
More than 90 international event planners from across Europe and North America attended our flagship MeetGB event on 11-12 April 2019 to meet and do business with 85 suppliers from across the UK.
During the two-day workshop, more than 5,600 one-to-one prescheduled business meetings took place between international buyers and UK suppliers to discuss future event opportunities, showcasing why we are the destination of choice for meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE).
The theme of this year's MeetGB celebrated the UK's rich royal history, with delegates enjoying the gala dinner at the historic Hampton Court Palace which included a banquet and entertainment in the iconic and historic medieval Great Hall. We also welcomed six journalists from international trade publications, who took part in a full itinerary of one-to-one meetings, press conferences and a mini-fam visit of Windsor.
Prior to the event, buyers spent three days on nine educational trips throughout the country. From Scotland to Devon, attendees were visiting conference centres, hotels and local attractions to experience first-hand what is avaliable for their events.
Promoting England and Britain at IBTM World
The UK and England were out in full force at IBTM World in November 2018. The VisitEngland stand had a record 39 stand partners, with a busy three days of appointments with international meeting and event planners. VisitEngland celebrated our ‘Literary Greats’ theme, capturing the imagination of buyers by exploring the possibilities for events and incentives whilst being immersed in the world of English literature. As part of the theme, VisitEngland celebrated with its ‘Mad Hatters Tea Party’, transforming the stand into an Alice in Wonderland extravaganza, attendees were surrounded by the well-loved characters from Lewis Carroll’s classic book. The VisitEngland stand won the Best Use of PR award by IBTM World, for our Alice in Wonderland efforts.
The inaugural VisitBritain stand at IBTM World celebrated ‘Great launches in Great Britain’, showcasing the major MICE product launches. This includes three major convention centre openings – ICC Wales opening in July 2019, The Events Complex Aberdeen (TECA) opening Summer 2019 and the Winter Gardens Conference and Exhibition Centre in Blackpool. VisitBritain also welcomed a new Eurostar and Virgin Trains partnership to offer a united travel service, giving international event planners the freedom to book multi-stop journeys from mainland Europe to British destinations on the two train networks through a ‘one-stop-shop’.
New website positions Britain as a leading events destination
We’ve launched our new Events are GREAT website, raising awareness of the UK as a world-class business events destination. Promoting the event capabilities across 21 UK cities, the new site also enables conference and event organisers to submit their request for proposal for prospective events.
MeetGB China hosts over 600 one to one business meetings
27 meeting and incentive suppliers from across the UK attended our inaugural MeetGB China event on 28 September where over 600 one to one business meetings with Chinese buyers took place.
The event was preceded by educational trips around the UK for the Chinese buyers who visited leading China- ready attractions, venues and destinations for the incentives and meetings sector.
