Satisfaction with public transport for inbound visitors (IPS, 2022)

Each year, VisitBritain add extra questions to the Office for National Statistics International Passenger Survey (IPS) to help us better understand the needs and characteristics of inbound visitors to Britain. One of the questions that added during 2022 focused on satisfaction with public transport for inbound visitors used during their stay. Please see more information about the IPS for further information.

Report highlights

  • 9 in 10 inbound visitors were satisfied with the UK’s public transport
  • Out of all journey purposes, holiday visitors had the highest satisfaction with public transport whilst on their trip to the UK.
  • More than 8 in 10 in all selected markets were satisfied with public transport in the UK with the highest satisfaction coming from long haul markets India, the USA, Canada, New Zealand and Australia.
  • Being ‘very satisfied’ with public transport increased with age from those aged 16+, whilst there were no significant differences by gender.
  • Visitors staying in Scotland and London cited the highest satisfaction amongst the UK’s nations and regions.

Modes of transport used by inbound visitors (IPS, 2018)

Each year, VisitBritain add extra questions to the Office for National Statistics International Passenger Survey (IPS) to help us better understand the needs and characteristics of inbound visitors to Britain. One of the questions that added during 2018 focused on the types of transport that visitors used during their stay. Please see more information about the IPS for further information.

Report highlights

  • In 2018, the most commonly used mode of transport by inbound visitors was ‘bus, tube, tram or metro train (within town/city)’, which was reported to be used by almost half of all respondents (49%). 
  • Over one-in-four say they used a taxi during their time in the UK (28%) and 23% used a train to travel outside of towns and cities.
  • Looking at transport within towns and cities, transport sharing apps have developed into a common alternative mode of transport, with 10% of inbound visitors using these in 2018.
