Records broken for number of international visits to UK in January

New figures released by the Office for National Statistics show that more than 2.5 million visits were made in January 2016, a new January record, up 6% on the same month last year. Overseas visitors spent £1.28 billion while in the UK during January 2016, 3% less than the same month in 2015.

During the twelve months to January 2016, inbound visitor spending was £21.8 billion, in line with the record breaking results of the previous twelve months. Holiday and visits to friends and relatives (VFR) both increased by 15% in January 2016 from last year, with VFR reaching over 1 million visits in January. This is the first January to record over 1 million VFR visits and sets a new twelve month record of 10.6 million VFR visits
