National Accessible Scheme review 2022

VisitEngland is undertaking a review of the National Accessible Scheme (NAS)

The NAS is a long-running voluntary scheme that helps accommodation proprietors in England to develop and promote their true level of accessibility and helps people with accessibility requirements identify suitable accommodation more easily. It comprises a comprehensive set of standards and, for a fee, assessment by a trained independent assessor.

The review of the NAS is being carried out within the wider context of VisitEngland’s work on accessible tourism, particularly the provision of the Accessibility Guides initiative and the comprehensive guidance on the Business Advice Hub.

Consumer research

Primary consumer research is almost complete amongst people who take short breaks or holidays in England, staying in paid-for accommodation. All respondents or people they care for have accessibility requirements (adults or children). The consumer research consists of:

  • An online 15 minute survey targeting 600 people, drawn from a population-representative consumer panel.
  • 18 in-depth interviews using an immersive approach for people who have taken a recent trip or people who have researched and booked an imminent trip

XV Insight is undertaking the consumer research on behalf of VisitEngland.

Industry consultation – Your input

We are keen to receive the views of suppliers and others working in the visitor economy to help us identify and deliver initiatives in support of the Government’s ambition for the UK to become the most accessible tourism destination in Europe.

Tomorrow’s Tourism is administering the industry consultation on behalf of VisitEngland.

Current and lapsed participants

Current and recently lapsed NAS participants will receive a link by email to an online survey no later than Friday 6th May 2022. Businesses that lapsed over two years ago will not be emailed but can request a link to the survey by emailing: info@tomorrowstourism.com with 'NAS survey - lapsed' in the subject line.

Other industry stakeholders

If you have a view on the NAS, and are not a current or lapsed participant, you can submit your comments via an online form. The survey will close on 22 May 2022.
