The Trip Tracker survey carried out on behalf of VisitEngland, the national tourist board by research agency TNS interviewed 1,230 adults aged 16+ across the country.
Key figures include:
- 12% of British adults ‘definitely’ plan to take an overnight trip over the Easter break in the UK with a further 12%% undecided. (In 2015 those definitely planning an overnight trip were 9%, indicating that more Brits are inclined to travel this Easter than last).
- Among those who ‘definitely’ or ‘might’ take a trip over the bank holiday weekend, 57% plan to take a holiday or short break, while 51% will visit friends or relatives.
- As has been the case in previous years, those aged under 35 are the most likely to be taking a trip, as nearly half of them (47%) ‘Definitely’ or ‘might’ take a trip.
- Parents (50%) are also more likely to be taking a trip than those without children (27%).
Among those undecided on whether to plan a trip here in the UK, 28% are waiting to see what the weather will be like and 26% to see if they can afford it, with the weather looking to be less of a concern this year than last (35%).
Patricia Yates, VisitEngland’s Director of Strategy and Communications says: “Easter is one of the busiest travel times of the year as many plan a break to coincide with the start of warmer weather. It is great therefore that so many people are planning to holiday at home, which echoes the growth we are seeing in both visitors numbers and spend across the country.”
Amongst the list of many things to do this Easter weekend is a visit to Warwick Castle's new Horrible Histories Maze, Longleat Safari Park (which is celebrating its 50th anniversary), Cox’s Cave in the Cheddar Gorge, Somerset; and for children, the gold bunny hunt at Wisley Gardens, Surrey, Easter Weekend at Blenheim Palace, Oxfordshire or Roald Dahl's Tremendous Adventures at Tatton Park, Cheshire. With 2016 being the Year of the English Garden and the 300th anniversary of landscape architect Capability Brown, a visit to the many gardens across the country should also feature top of the list of things to do this weekend.
